Mother held in baby murder probe

A murder investigation has been launched in Northern Ireland following the death of a baby.

The child's mother was arrested and detained under mental health legislation after an incident in east Belfast last month.

Forensic officers had examined the house in Connsbrook Avenue, a built up residential street of terraced housing.

A Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) spokesman said: " Police investigating an incident in the Connsbrook Avenue area of east Belfast last month in which a baby was critically injured have commenced a murder investigation following the death of the child.

"A woman was arrested at the time and was detained under the Mental Health Act. Police inquiries are continuing."
