Police have launched a murder investigation after a stab victim died in hospital from his injuries.

The 51-year-old man was attacked in the Francis Street area of Londonderry at around 1.30pm on Tuesday.

He was taken for treatment at Altnagelvin Hospital but died as a result of his injuries last night.

On Tuesday a 34-year-old woman was arrested by police and last night was still helping them with their inquiries.

The attack is the second fatal stabbing to take place in the city in the past few days after a 56-year-old man died following an attack on Sunday morning.

SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan said his sympathies were with the family of the victim and said the incident “highlighted the true danger of knives”.

“This is an extremely difficult time for the family,” he said.

“Obviously a very sad time for them all and the thoughts and prayers from the people of Derry and the community are very much with them.

“It’s a really terrible thing and obviously we would like to see this kind of thing eradicated.

“Incidents like these really do highlight the danger of knives.”
