Murdered GAA star James Hughes to be laid to rest
Large crowds are expected to attend the funeral today of murdered GAA star James Hughes, who was shot dead in Dundalk at the weekend.
The Crossmaglen father-of-three was gunned down as he sat in a taxi outside a friend’s house in the early hours of Sunday morning. His friend Patricia Byrne (21) was injured in the shooting, along with the taxi driver.
Parish Priest Fr Joseph McKeever said it has been a “harrowing week” for Mr Hughes’ family, friends, football colleagues and the community of Crossmaglen, where the 35-year-old’s funeral will be held at St Patrick’s Church.
Earlier this week, Shane Rogers (32), of Deery Terrace, Iniskeen, Co Monaghan, appeared in court in Dundalk charged with Mr Hughes’ murder.
