New Year, new beginnings.

Maternity wards across Northern Ireland were busy as the chimes heralded the start of 2014.

Parents, some new and some old-hands with newborns, were celebrating as the first babies of the year were born.

Among hospitals welcoming new arrivals were the Royal Victoria in Belfast, Altnagelvin in Londonderry, Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, the Ulster in Dundonald and Daisy Hill in Newry.

Deborah and Jonathan Wilson, from Newtownabbey, welcomed Imogen Grace into the world when she was born at 2.54am at the Royal Maternity Hospital.

The little girl weighed 8lbs 10oz.

Just six minutes later, another newborn's cry could be heard in the same hospital as Colette Matthews from Belfast gave birth to a girl. Little Ava was born at 3am, weighing 6lbs 11oz. She is the youngest of three children for her proud parents.

Stacey Trimble also joined the list of New Year's mums when her baby boy Jake made his entrance, at a more civilised 7.57am.

Jake weighed in at 5lbs 7oz after being delivered via a water birth at the Royal.

At Altnagelvin, another happy couple were welcoming a baby boy into the world.

Laura Colhoun gave birth at 7.44am to her son, who is yet to be named.

He tipped the scales at 7lbs 7oz. Her husband Mark is looking forward to getting the new arrival back to their Drumquin home.

In Belfast, Jane Young kept the midwives at the Royal busy when she gave birth to a little girl who was born at 6.46am and weighed 7lbs 4oz.

She and Robert McMullan have yet to name their bundle of joy.

At the Causeway Hospital, Kelly Hutchinson was delighted to welcome a baby boy at 10.47am. The infant, who has not yet been named, was a healthy 8lbs 11oz.

At Daisy Hill, Danielle Campbell from Kilkeel gave birth to her daughter Cara-Lee who weighed in at exactly 6lbs. The new arrival clocked in at 8.26am.

And Amanda Hickland from Belfast was also celebrating after her daughter Holly was born at 5.59am. Midwives at the Royal said she weighed 71bs 5oz.
