New boss at Probation Board takes up her post
The Probation Board has appointed a new head after the departure of its current director to take up a new role with the Prison Service.
Cheryl Lamont, who is a current deputy director, has been promoted to acting director of the Probation Board for Northern Ireland following the departure of Brian McCaughey on secondment to the prisons sector.
Ms Lamont said she was privileged and honoured to take up the post.
"Probation staff are professional and skilled and work extremely hard to challenge and change offenders' behaviour and reduce crime and the harm it does," she said.
"I am looking forward to working with colleagues to deliver the best quality service to all the people of Northern Ireland."
Probation Board chairman Vilma Patterson welcomed the appointment.
"Cheryl has a distinguished career working in probation and building partnerships with a range of key stakeholders in criminal justice," she said.
"I am confident that her appointment will enable probation to build on all that it has achieved to date and her extensive experience will help enhance probation's role in making communities safer.
Ms Patterson also paid tribute to departing director Brian McCaughey for his "guidance, direction and foresight".
