New Year babies in pictures: Bundles of joy who took first breath on opening day of year

By Joanne Sweeney

New year, new hopes for these beautiful innocents.

The miracle of life was quietly celebrated by excited and emotional parents as others partied into the wee hours.

There were collective gasps of joy and wonderment from new mums, dads and midwives in maternity wards all over Northern Ireland to welcome the newborns on January 1.

The honour of the first child to make an appearance in 2015 went to baby girl Aoibheann McCaughan who was born at Antrim Area Hospital at 12.22am.

Weighing in at 7lb 1oz, she's the daughter of Leah and Malachy McCaughan from Loughguile in Co Antrim.

Next for Antrim Area Hospital was the arrival of baby Jacob, born at 1.09am to mum Paula Saxova from Slovakia.

The Home from Home unit at the maternity wing of the Ulster Hospital at Dundonald marked the New Year with three births.

The earliest to arrive at 1.52am was to Jennifer Todd from Belfast who had a baby girl weighing 7lb 5ozs.

At Lagan Valley Hospital, Sofia Molly was born to mum Elaine Lucas at 2.09am, weighing in at 5lb 13ozs.

The Royal Victoria Hospital's maternity unit in Belfast was particularly busy, reporting six births by 10am yesterday and had a "full board" of mums in delivery suites by mid-afternoon.

New dad Eamon Grant and his partner Geraldine Fox from Andersonstown in Belfast called their first baby Tia after she was born at 3.09am at the Royal Jubilee Maternity Hospital.

"We just wanted to call her something that was short and sweet," said the new dad.

"I hope to get them home tomorrow."

He added: "We will support Tia in whatever she chooses to do in her life, no matter what."
