The death of a woman in Newry yesterday has left people in the city in shock.

As news of a double shooting tragedy just across the border emerged last night, locals in the Kilmorey Street area were trying to come to terms with what has happened in their district.

There was some confusion at first over whether the incidents were linked.

However, police later confirmed that they were separate events.

A PSNI source described it as "a sudden death reported to us earlier this afternoon - not linked to the Omeath tragedy."

Police officers were last night standing outside a terraced house in Kilmorey Street.

One neighbour said: "We are not sure what has happened but a woman has died in the house which had been vacant.

"She may be a foreigner and may be in her 50s but it is still a shock. The police and ambulance came to the area today around 1.30pm and forensic officers were there too."
