Newtownabbey crash sends car's engine flying through air
Two people were taken to hospital and an engine was hurled through the air due to the ferocity of a road traffic collision in Newtownabbey yesterday.
One car came to rest down an embankment and the other against a telegraph pole.
The engine of a Volkswagen Polo was ripped out and landed more than 60ft away on a grass area following the crash at the junction of Mallusk Road and Park Road.
The road was closed between Hydepark Road and Bernice Road for several hours, police said.
A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesman said: "At 11.44am we received a report of a two-car road traffic collision and we sent two rapid response paramedics and two accident and emergency crews.
"The first rapid response was on the scene within three minutes. One patient was trapped and we contacted the Fire Service for assistance. We took two patients to hospital, one to the Royal Victoria Hospital and one to Antrim Area Hospital." Neither is believed to be in a life-threatening condition,
