A primary school pupil has died following a collision outside Model Primary School in Newtownards.

The six-year-old child was struck by a car on the Scrabo Road at around 3.20pm. The road has been closed following the serious crash.

It is understood the pupil was taken to the Ulster Hospital in Dundonald.

Police have appealed for anyone who witnessed the collision and who has not yet spoken to police to contact them. Investigating officers can be contacted by calling 101.

Earlier a PSNI spokesman said: "Motorists are advised that the Scrabo Road in Newtownards has been closed following a serious road traffic collision. Diversions are in place at Mill Street and Scrabo Road roundabout.

There are no further details at this stage.
