Detectives are appealing for witnesses following two suspected arson attacks in Newtownards on Friday and Sunday.

On Friday evening police attended the former Carpetright site on the Portaferry Road at around 10:50pm, following the report of a fire. NIFRS personnel extinguished the blaze but substantial damage was caused to the premises.

The second incident occurred at around 1am on Sunday, when officers attended a fire at a house under construction in the Jubilee Road area of Ards. The house was completely destroyed as a result of the blaze.

Detective Inspector Colgan said: "We are currently investigating a possible link between these two incidents and are appealing to anyone with any information to contact detectives at Bangor Reactive and Organised Crime, using the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 102 on 09/10/16 or 1386 on 07/10/16.

"Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
