No bail for phone smuggling inmate

A bailed prisoner who tried to smuggle a mobile phone into jail internally has been refused further compassionate bail to visit his sick mother at Christmas.

Craigavon Crown Court, sitting in Belfast, heard that 27-year-old Andrew Robert Norman |Mercer set off a scanner at Maghaberry prison on his return to the jail on the last occasion|he was granted compassionate bail.

Crown lawyer David Russell revealed that yesterday Mercer was granted fresh bail on other charges by the High Court, who had not been informed of the |mobile phone incident.

Defence lawyer Richard McConkey said that Mercer, who is before the Crown Court on different charges, had wanted the bail to visit his mother in hospital on Christmas Day.

He added that he had not been aware of the mobile phone smuggling episode, but had he been, he would have informed the High Court.
