Northern Ireland football supporters to start charity walk in Holywood
Holywood will be the starting point for three special Northern Ireland football supporters who are planning to walk around the country for charity.
Peter Topping, Brian Quinn and Trevor Hollinger are taking part in the massive ‘Our Wee Country Challenge', which will see them walk 300 miles in 11 days, raising much needed funds for the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children (NICFC).
The three men begin their trek on Friday, September 18, from the town, and arrive back at the Odyssey Arena in east Belfast 12 days later on Tuesday, September 29.
Local people can take part in a section of the walk this Saturday at Crawfordsburn Park.
Participants can join Peter, Brian and Trevor at 10am from the car park on the first leg of their trek which will end at the Piccy Park in Bangor, before the three men proceed on their own for the rest of the journey.
The level of support for the walk has already encouraged young people involved in the charity’s specialised Youth Programme to take part in this event, as their way of “giving something back” for the support they have received from such charity helpers.
Judith Sayers has been involved in NICFC Youth Programme for seven years, and is currently in remission following recent treatment.
Her motivation to get involved and take part in the sponsored walk comes from the help and support she has received from NICFC Youth Programme throughout her cancer journey,
Judith said: “Being involved in the NICFC Youth Programme has opened up a world of opportunity for me, from being involved in Duke of Edinburgh Scheme to sailing with the Ellen MacArthur Trust.
“I’ve met friends and I would say the main benefit is the confidence and skills I have gained, helping me move on with my life.”
