A man from Northern Ireland has died in Australia after falling from a houseboat on the Murray River, near the border between New South Wales and Victoria.

Builder Niall Quinn (25) was on the boat with a group of friends when he fell overboard into the river at Echuca Moama at about 1.40am local time.

It is believed Mr Quinn, understood to be from Co Armagh, may have hit his head as he fell in.

His friends reportedly jumped in to save him but were unable to find him.

“On the way down he’s actually collided with the bottom deck of the houseboat and fallen into the water and gone under,” NSW Police Force’s Acting Superintendent Peter Hayes said.

His body was located by police divers at around 3.45pm local time. Ten privately owned vessels assisted in the search.

Police said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Republic's Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to Mr Quinn’s family.
