Northern Ireland Press Photographer of the Year: 40 years of iconic images
To coincide with the anniversary celebrations we've compiled some of the most iconic images of the last 40 years
The BT Northern Ireland Press Photographer of the Year competition, which recognises and rewards the outstanding work of Northern Ireland’s press photographers, celebrates 40 years at a gala event at Belfast City Hall on Thursday night.
The evening is hosted by newsreader and journalist Sir Trevor McDonald.
NIPPA chairman Bill Smyth said: "Each year we receive more than 500 pictures from press photographers across the country, and year on year the standard of competition entries increases."
"There is an enormous pool of talent in Northern Ireland – through this competition, the skill, creativity, commitment and professionalism of local photo journalists can be recognised. We are also delighted to be marking the milestone of 40 years of the association in the prestigious surroundings of the City Hall."
The event will be held as a fundraiser for Depaul, with all proceeds going directly to the charity and its work with those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Depaul has been appointed by Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon as her chosen Charity of the Year for 2015.
The charity provides accommodation and vital support to those most in need in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, operating 22 specialised services across Belfast, Dungannon, Derry, Newry, Armagh and Dublin.
