A decorated army officer from Northern Ireland has received his OBE from Prince William.

Lieutenant Colonel David Brian Kenny of the Royal Irish Regiment received the Order of the British Empire from the Duke of Cambridge yesterday.

The senior officer received the medal in recognition of his service in Afghanistan.

The award was announced in the Queen's Birthday Honours List earlier this year.

It is the second national honour the high-ranking officer has received from the Palace.

In 2009, Mr Kenny, then a major, received the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service, again for services in Afghanistan.
