Northern Ireland's super structures in the running for awards
What do a centuries-old church, a Victorian jail and the shiny new Titanic Belfast have in common?
Nothing really, except they are all in the running for a coveted Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors award.
Despite last year's Carbuncle Cup judges deeming Titanic Belfast to be one of the ugliest buildings in the UK, it has been shortlisted in the Design and Innovation category of the RICS Northern Ireland Awards 2013.
The structure's competition includes Belfast Metropolitan College and the Giant's Causeway visitor centre.
The Peace Bridge in Londonderry has been given the nod in the Regeneration category, as has Downshire Civic Centre in Downpatrick and Leap Mill in Omagh.
Judges will decide which of the eight shortlisted projects conserved or improved the built or natural environment in a way that has contributed to the area.
Four winners will be picked from each category and an overall award – sponsored by Tughans, the DoE and the Department for Social Development – will be selected from 31 shortlisted entries. The four category winners will represent Northern Ireland against projects in Great Britain and internationally in the overall RICS Awards.
Ben Collin, RICS Northern Ireland director, said: "Due to the quality of the projects, the shortlist is a beacon of excellence."
The RICS Awards ceremony takes place in May, with the grand final in London in October.
