OAPs are targeted by bogus callers

By Adrian Rutherford

Two elderly women have been targeted by thieves posing as water quality inspectors.

The two distraction-type burglaries took place in Newtownabbey and Randalstown yesterday afternoon.

In the first incident a man went to a house in the Lurgan West Terrace area of Randalstown around midday claiming he was checking water.

He was allowed to enter by the elderly female occupant. He went into the kitchen before leaving after the occupant said she was contacting a family member.

It is not believed that anything was stolen during the incident.

Just over an hour later, about 1.20pm, it was reported that a man went to a house in the Antrim Road area of Newtownabbey claiming that he was also checking water quality.

Again, the man was granted entry by the elderly female occupant. He went into the kitchen and checked under the sink before leaving.

It is not believed anything was stolen during the incident.

Witnesses to either incident are asked to contact police.
