Officer injured in brick attack by gang of youths

A police officer has sustained a head injury during an attack by brick-throwing youths in Craigavon.

A police vehicle was also badly damaged when the gang of up to six masked young people pelted officers with bricks and stones in the Drumbeg area at around 11am yesterday. The incident occurred close to where PSNI constable Stephen Carroll was killed in 2009.

Officers were responding to a genuine report of a burglary when they were targeted. The officer struck on the head was not believed to be seriously injured. Police said they were unable to carry out inquiries about the burglary as a result of the attack.

SDLP MLA and Policing Board member Dolores Kelly condemned the attack and said people were fed-up with anti-social behaviour in the area.

“Local people are fed-up with having to live with this type of thing in their estate,” she said.

“The majority of people just want some sort of normal life.”

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
