Old Belfast to Co Down railway line may become cycling path
Wartime evacuees still talk about travelling from Belfast to the Co Down countryside on the long defunct Belfast & Co Down railway system.
But the railway lines are long gone and the beautiful old railway bridges are becoming smothered in brambles.
Now campaigners are hoping to draw on the lessons of the Comber Greenway and transform more of the old railway network into a series of walking and cycling routes that would also provide a wildlife corridor through the countryside.
And a meeting with Transport Minister Danny Kennedy last week proved positive, with the minister indicating he would like to convene round table discussions as a precursor to a feasibility study into creating a new greenway along the line.
