Omagh man scoops €100,000 poker prize at Galway event

A 26-year-old poker player from Co Tyrone turned €55 into €100,000 at the PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) event in Galway yesterday.

Emmett Mullin from Omagh qualified for the event, which costs €770 to enter, via a €55 tournament at online poker site PokerStars. Mullin then went on to top the field of 698 players, who came from 34 different countries, to win the top prize of €100,000.

Moments after his career-defining win, Mr Mullin said: “It’s unbelievable and hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s by far my biggest cash and winning the event is huge for me.”

Previously his biggest win came in September 2011 when he won €2,050 after finishing 20th at UKIPT Dublin.

Incredibly Mullin has already won his seat to the next PokerStars UKIPT event, which is due to take place in Nottingham from April 12-16.

The Galway poker tournament, which took place over five days, had a total prize pool of €473,945, which was shared among the 81 top finishers.

Another Irishman – 33-year-old Ronan Gilligan from Galway – was the runner-up, pocketing €73,650.

He also won his seat in a qualifying tournament at PokerStars.
