White's Tavern, one of Belfast's oldest pubs, has reopened following a refurbishment prompted by the departure of its tenants after 12 years in charge.

The traditional venue has now been done up by owners Beannchor, the pub and hotel group behind the Merchant Hotel, The Dirty Onion and around 20 other venues in Belfast and Co Down.

Its menu has been overhauled and its walls decorated with pictures, while shelves feature barrels for ageing whiskey, port and fortified wine.

Operations director Sorcha Wolsey said: "White's Tavern is one of Belfast's most iconic pubs and has long been a part of the fabric of the city's social scene.

"Following the success of our latest launch, The Dirty Onion, we can see that there clearly is a real appetite for traditional Belfast pubs that offer an authentic local experience."

The upstairs of White's has also been given an overhaul, and will now host gigs with a line-up including the Belfast Trad Collective and a pianist.

Earlier this year former tenants Stephen and Kris Nixon said they were leaving the Winecellar Entry pub because of the toll flag protests and other disruptions had taken on their business.

Their decision to quit the pub marked the Northern Ireland pub trade's first big shake-up of 2014 after last year's collapse of the Botanic Inns group.
