Outrage after vandals deface Newry memorial
Vandals caused anger after they sprayed red paint on Saturday night on a republican memorial in a Newry graveyard.
Paint was used to deface the monument at St Mary's cemetery on Chapel Hill in the city.
Sinn Fein MP Mickey Brady described the attack as "outrageous".
He said it had caused distress to families with loved ones buried in the graveyard.
"The republican plot in Newry was desecrated. All graveyards are sacred places and should be respected," he said.
"Graveyards are places that should be respected and, unfortunately, in this case these people came in the dead of night; they hadn't the courage to do it in daylight."
The PSNI said officers were working to establish a motive for the attack and he appealed for anyone with information to contact police.
