Outrage as Guildhall to miss start of Culture year
The closure of Londonderry's historic Guildhall for the first few months of the city's inaugural year as UK City of Culture has been branded "ridiculous".
The ongoing works at the city's most central building will now not be ready in time for the opening celebrations in January, and it is likely to be spring before visitors can access the building.
The confirmation from Derry City Council is the latest hammer blow to the city this week, coming just days after Transport Minister Danny Kennedy ruled out any chance of upgrading Derry's rail links in time for 2013.
Foyleside Consulting representative and community activist Mary Casey said more needed to be done to ensure timetables of work are nailed down urgently.
Mrs Casey said: "The City of Culture is going to bring up to a million visitors to the city.
"The whole thing is ridiculous."
