Paedophile admits to the rape of his cousin

By George Jackson

A 54-year-old man who pleaded not guilty to two charges of raping his cousin yesterday admitted both charges after he was rearraigned at the Crown Court in Londonderry.

Frankie McFadden, from Moyola Drive in the Shantallow area of the city, had already pleaded guilty to five charges of indecently assaulting his cousin, guilty to two charges of committing acts of gross indecency on her, guilty to two charges of physically assaulting her, and guilty to one charge of threatening to kill her.

He committed all of the offences over a 10-year period starting in May 1975 when his cousin was aged six. Despite the family relationship between McFadden and his victim, McFadden can be publicly named as the result of his victim, Martina Johnston, waiving her right to anonymity at last week's hearing.

Judge Philip Babington ordered pre-sentence and victim impact reports before McFadden is sentenced on December 19.

McFadden, who is already on the sex offenders' register, was released on continuing bail until that date.
