A pensioner was tied up with a belt by armed burglars who made off with a substantial amount of cash.

Two men, one carrying a suspected firearm, went into the home of the man aged in his 70s yesterday morning.

They grabbed the widower, who lives alone on the Banbridge Road near Rathfriland, and tied his feet with a belt.

One of the men was described as being between 20 and 30 years, 5ft 2ins tall, light build, dark clothing and wearing a balaclava. The second was described as being aged in his 30s, 6ft tall, of large build, and wearing dark clothing.

The victim was uninjured but was left badly shaken by his ordeal.

Margaret Ritchie MP condemned the burglary.

"I am shocked to learn of this disgraceful incident," she said.

"In the weeks leading to Christmas it is particularly appalling that an elderly gentleman should be tied up and robbed in his own home, which is an extremely frightening experience."
