A woman in her 80s has had her purse taken during a distraction burglary in Newtownabbey.

On Wednesday afternoon, a man claiming to represent water authorities called at the Glenvarna Green property at around 2pm.

The man showed the resident a brief glance of what he claimed was an ID card and entered the house.

He was in the property for around half an hour and when he left, the resident noticed her purse was missing.

Detective Sergeant John McKendry is appealing for witnesses.

He said: “This man is described as around 20-years-old, 6ft, with brown hair and was wearing a dark jacket with a flag design on left side.

"We would like to hear from anyone with information about this crime or any who noticed the suspect or any other suspicious activity in the Glenvarna Green area yesterday.

"Detectives can be contacted on 101.

"I would also like to remind all residents to treat all unexpected callers to the home with caution. Most callers will be genuine however there are those out there who will seek to exploit a trusting nature for criminal gain.

"Never permit anyone entry to your home unless you are 100% sure of who they are. If this means asking them to leave and come back once you have had a chance to check their credentials, then so be it. Legitimate callers won’t mind.

"Don’t be pressured into letting a stranger into your home - if there’s any doubt, keep them out.”
