An 80-year-old Co Londonderry man is to go on trial next month charged with stealing a bird.

At his arraignment before Judge Philip Babington yesterday, Lawrence Dickson from Drumachose Park in Limavady pleaded not guilty to a charge of stealing a mule cross goldfinch bird valued at £20 on May 12 last year.

The defendant also pleaded not guilty to causing criminal damage to the bird and to going equipped for a burglary or a theft by carrying a screwdriver.

Those offences are also alleged to have occurred on May 12 of last year.

When asked by Judge Babington if the defendant had elected for a jury trial, defence barrister Joe McCann replied "yes".

The defendant was released on continuing bail until May 10 when a date for his one to two day trial will be fixed.

Mr Dickson's trial will take place at the Crown Court in Londonderry.
