Peru Two: Michaella McCollum Connolly and Melissa Reid could be sentenced before Christmas
The Peru Two could be sentenced before Christmas, the mother of one of the women has been told.
Michaella McCollum Connolly (20) from Dungannon, and Melissa Reid (20) from Lenzie, near Glasgow, are awaiting sentencing in Virgine de Fatima prison, after being caught trying to smuggle £1.5m of cocaine on to a flight from Lima to Spain in August.
In September, the pair pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.
Melissa Reid's mother Debbie has just visited her daughter in jail and said the family has been told there is a chance sentencing could happen before Christmas, although the court process could still drag on in to next year. On Thursday, Melissa's parents held talks with the family lawyer to find out when their daughter and Michaella may be able to return to Scotland and Northern Ireland respectively.
Melissa's father, William Reid, told the Mail on Sunday: "We understand the legal system in Peru doesn't move as fast as in the UK."
Debbie Reid added: "Getting the sentence will give us something to work towards. We're just hoping for the shortest possible sentence.
"There could be a shock coming but we're just hoping for the best."
