Pipe bomb thrown at house in east Belfast

Published 01/05/2015

An object thrown in the garden of a house in east Belfast has been declared a viable pipe bomb.

It was reported that shortly after 3.40am an object had been thrown into the garden of a house in the Island Street area.

Two people believed to have been involved made off on a motorcycle.

Army bomb experts examined the suspicious object and  declared it to be a viable pipe bomb type device.

A motorcycle, believed to have been involved, was recovered by police a short time later in the Clandeboye Street area just off Castlereagh Street.

Police are also investigating whether a single vehicle road traffic collision on the Beersbridge Road shortly before 5am this morning involving a red coloured Honda Civic was also linked to the incident.

Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information about the movements of a red Kawasaki motorcycle or the red Honda Civic to contact Detectives in Musgrave Police Station on the non-emergency number 101.

Information can also be passed anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
