Pipe-bomb found near school in Northern Ireland alerts

By Rebecca Black

A pipe-bomb was found yards from a school playground amid a series of security alerts across Northern Ireland.

Devices were found in west Belfast and Armagh, while false alarms caused chaos elsewhere.

A fifth security alert was sparked in south Belfast yesterday afternoon following the discovery of what is believed to be an old wartime-type shell in Musgrave Park.

The park was closed to the public for a short time while ammunition technical officers examined the object and later removed it.

West Belfast MP Paul Maskey condemned those who left a pipe-bomb close to De La Salle college yesterday morning, causing a number of residents in the Cavanmore Gardens area to be evacuated.

"Those responsible have no support in this area yet continue sporadically to endanger the community," he said.

In Armagh city, residents were evacuated from Alexandra Avenue when an explosive device was found.

The Army have taken both devices away for examination.
