Police officers have come under attack while responding to a call in Londonderry.

Two vehicles were badly damaged after being pelted with heavy masonry during disorder in the Leafair Gardens area last night.

Trouble flared at about 9.50pm and officers had to use CS spray to bring the situation under control.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The PSNI is also investigating reports that shots were fired at about 11.20pm.

A 17-year-old man was arrested for disorderly behaviour and was released pending a report to the Public Prosecution Service.

PSNI Inspector Jonathan Cooke said: "I would appeal to anyone who has any information about these incidents to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.

"Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
