Police are investigating the discovery of man's body in a bungalow in Banbridge.

The property in Brookefield Gardens in the Ballygowan Park area was cordoned off last night to allow PSNI officers and forensics experts to investigate.

Some local residents claimed police had told them there had been "a horrible accident" involving a young man, believed to have been in his 20s.

DUP councillor Carla Lockhart visited the scene last night.

She said: "It is obviously alarming for people to see such a heavy police presence in a residential area.

"I have spoken to the PSNI and they indicate that investigations are ongoing and officers will remain in the area until they have completed this process.

"We should not jump to conclusions at this stage about what may have happened, as we do not yet know if there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death."

A PSNI spokesperson said that a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death.
