A man and a woman are being questioned in connection with an attempted murder in Co Armagh.

The 25-year-old woman and a 26-year-old man were arrested yesterday by detectives investigating the brutal attack of an elderly, disabled man at his home in Bessbrook.

Detectives from Reactive and Organised Crime confirmed the pair have been detained and are currently assisting police with their inquiries following the attack.

It is believed the victim may have been stabbed by a hook during the horrific attack.

The incident happened at the man's home at Clogharevan Park in the early hours of Monday, August 31.

Police initially launched an investigation into the crime as a violent aggravated burglary after a gang entered the man's home shortly before 3am.

They beat him as he lay in his bed and police believe a sum of money was also stolen.

The man was treated for serious stab wounds at Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry before being later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

He remains critically ill in hospital.
