A major security operation was mounted at the headquarters of the Policing Board yesterday - hours ahead of a meeting.

Mystery surrounded the heavy police presence that saw PSNI officers flank the Belfast building.

The PSNI launched the security operation on Wednesday evening after officers swamped the Policing Board building at Clarendon Dock.

Items, including fire extinguishers, were removed and placed through X-ray scanning equipment before being returned.

A police spokeswoman said: "The PSNI ensure there is an appropriate and proportionate police presence for every Policing Board meeting."
