Pregnant woman will be released from jail to give birth
A heavily pregnant woman accused of targeting a pensioner in a distraction theft can be released from custody because she is about to give birth, a High Court judge has ruled.
Lamita Mihai (20) was granted bail on a charge of stealing £140 from the 86-year-old woman in Londonderry.
The Romanian national, who already has four children, is to live at an address in Co Donegal.
Mr Justice Deeny said: "The fact she will reside outside the jurisdiction would normally be a significant difficulty about granting bail. However, it's outweighed in my view in this instance by the fact she is about to give birth."
Mihai and another woman are alleged to have stolen at least £140 from a pensioner's purse after distracting her at Lisnaglevin Shopping Centre on March 20.
Granting bail, Mr Justice Deeny noted the accused's father is willing to put up a £500 cash surety to secure her release. He ordered Mihai to surrender her identity card before being released.
