Pro-lifers to protest at abortion conference

A hotel group in Northern Ireland has defended its decision to host a conference on abortion — despite calls from pro-life groups to cancel the event.

The Family Planning Association is to host the first ever All-Ireland Conference on Abortion and Clinical Care at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle today and tomorrow.

But it is understood the hotel has received angry emails and calls from pro-life campaigners about the conference.

One group, Precious Life, is holding a protest to coincide with the conference and has invited pro-life politicians.

Bernie Smyth from Precious Life said: “What the organisers and speakers at this conference are doing is incitement to commit the crimes of illegal abortion and child destruction.”

However Independent Unionist MLA Dawn Purvis said she was “shocked and appalled” at the attempts to prevent the conference.

“This a a conference for medical practitioners about clinical practices, it is not about the ethics or morals of abortion and for pro-life groups and politicians to interfere is wrong,” she said.
