Public sector jobs created in city
Up to 20 public sector jobs are to be created in Co Londonderry, it has been announced.
The new posts at the new Social Security Agency's mail unit will provide a welcome boost for an area blighted by rising unemployment.
Based at the Limavady Jobs and Benefits Office the specialist digital scanning and opening department is expected to be operational from next January.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the announcement was good news.
"I very much welcome the Agency's drive towards modernising its services thereby improving the service it provides to claimants.
"It helps to ensure optimum use of the Social Security Agency estate and at the same time affords local people travelling to work in Belfast and other parts of Northern Ireland an opportunity to work closer to home."
The unit will open with 13 staff initially, expanding to 20 during the year and will have the capacity to expand further if required.
The Social Security Agency has launched a programme of reform and modernisation to improve efficiency through greater use of digital technology. It is hoped the new scanning unit will help reduce paper usage and cut down on transport and storage costs.
