Race meet called off as 'device' is found
A suspicious object sparked a security alert at Ballymena Showgrounds last night during a stock car racing meeting.
It is understood a pipe bomb-style device was discovered in the council-owned venue's car park.
Safety officer Adrian Scullion told the Belfast Telegraph almost 700 people, including drivers and spectators, were at the event, which had to be abandoned.
"There is a security alert ongoing in the car park," Mr Scullion said late last night.
"The police and bomb squad are examining what has been discovered. We had stock car racing on this evening, but everyone has been evacuated to a safe area.
"The area of the car park is sealed off and people in the complex are in a safe position."
He said he was liaising with police to ensure everyone remained safe at the Showgrounds, home to Ballymena United FC.
A local source added: "My brother is down there. I think people are in a sort of limbo."
