Reaching out... in friendship and support to gay youth

Cara-Friend is an organisation dedicated to supporting, empowering and educating the LGBT community in Northern Ireland.

As part of Belfast Pride week Patrick Anderson is helping organise an Educating the Educators event at The Gallery, University of Ulster, Belfast campus, from 6-9pm on July 30. Patrick said: "We saw a unique opportunity to combine my experience as a teacher and my work with the young people involved in Gay and Lesbian Youth NI (GLYNI) to be able to support educators, teachers, youth workers and anyone who works with young people in a professional capacity to deal with LGBT issues.

"It is to show them support and give advice, information and guidance on how to tackle homophobic or transphobic bullying and create safe and open spaces for every young person and staff member alike, whether LGBT or not.

"We will be sharing the personal experiences of our young people, many of whom are currently in education.

"We are using innovative resources and learning tools such as our Cara-Friend LGBT Youth App which was launched by Education Minister John O'Dowd in June.

"We will also provide LGBT Safe Space stickers which will be given to everyone who completes LGBT youth specific training which can then be displayed to show that they promote safe spaces for LGBT young people and professionals alike."
