Retired Belfast police officer accused of child porn offences

By Alan Erwin

A retired Belfast policeman appeared in court today accused of child porn offences.

Eric McIlveen (70) faces four charges in connection with images allegedly discovered in May this year.

He is accused of taking, possessing and distributing an indecent photograph of a child.

A fourth count involves allegedly having an extreme pornographic image.

As well as previously serving in the police, McIlveen is understood to have spent a period in the military.

His exact address in east Belfast is not being disclosed amid defence claims that it could lead to a security risk.

Dressed in a suit as he entered the dock at the city's Magistrates' Court for the first time, the accused nodded to confirm he understood the charges.

A detective said she could connect him with the alleged offences.

Prosecutors revealed that PSNI e-crime investigations in connection with the case are ongoing.

McIlveen was remanded on continuing bail to return to court in February.
