Artist George Callaghan is coming to the end of a prolific and critically acclaimed career.

So Callaghan is having a clear-out of his studio in preparation for retirement at the age of 73.

And now the east Belfast painter is auctioning off 200 pieces of his work, which were inspired by the city of his birth.

The unprecedented sale includes works spanning Callaghan's entire artistic career, including pieces which have gained him international recognition

While Callaghan now lives in Lherm, France, he feels that his "Irish psyche can shine brighter" when he is not living in Ireland.

This is evident in his monumental Belfast shipbuilding scenes, some of which are expected to fetch over £1,500.

Callaghan chose Belfast-based auctioneers Ross's to hold the auction, which specialises in selling Irish art.

The week-long sale will end on Wednesday and all pieces in the auction can be viewed at www.rosss.com.
