A 45-year-old man who threw several missiles at police lines after being soaked by water cannon during a riot last summer is starting an eight-month prison sentence.
Richard Louis Carson, from Lysander Park in Newtownards, was captured on police footage throwing two missiles at officers during serious street disorder which erupted in the Woodvale/Twaddell area of Belfast.
Violence in the north of the city broke out following a Parades Commission determination not to allow Orangemen to walk past the Ardoyne shop fronts on their return journey on July 12 last year.
After appearing in the dock of Belfast Crown Court yesterday, Carson was handed a 16-month sentence after he admitted a charge of rioting.
He will spend eight months of his sentence in custody with the remaining eight months spend on licence when he is released from prison.
A defence lawyer told Judge David McFarland that Carson's actions, whilst "inexcuseable", were "spur of the momemt", adding Carson had since expressed remorse for what he did.
