Rory McIlroy performs washing machine chip trick he made famous 16 years ago

The Holywood golfer first did the trick on the Gerry Kelly show in 1999

Rory McIlroy has proved he hasn't lost his skills as he performed a trick he made famous 16 years ago.

The world number three was in fine form at The Paddy Wallace Fund for Autism Christmas Ball in Titanic Belfast last night when he was challenged to chip a ball into a washing machine just like he did on the Gerry Kelly show in 1999 when he was just eight or nine-years-old.

Back then as a grinning child McIlroy told how that was the way he practiced his golf by chipping the ball into his mum's washing machine.

At the time he had just won the under-10 World Championship in Florida.

The four-time Major winner has come a long way since he appeared as an ambitious youngster.

And the former World No1, who won the DP World Tour Championship and Race to Dubai last month, was met with rapturous applause at the star-studded event as he was challenged once again by host Gerry Kelly to do the trick.

Soon the stage was set with a washing machine and the Co Down star took centre stage - and to his relief made the shot.

All eyes was on the golfing superstar last night as it was confirmed widespread speculation that he is now engaged to New Yorker Erica Stolll as she was spotted with a huge sparkling diamond on her hand.

Celebrity guests queued to congratulate them.

"Everything in my life is going great," Rory (26) said, looking fresh despite his recent eye surgery. "I'm happy with how the season ended - and how the year has ended."
