Rugby star who drove for food while drunk is banned for year

By Paul Higgins

An up-and-coming Ulster rugby star was caught drink driving when he went for a late night takeaway, a court has heard.

Newtownards Magistrates Court heard that 21-year-old fly half Brett William Herron had been drinking with friends on January 22 this year.

He returned home only to find no food in the house, so had foolishly got behind the wheel to go to a nearby McDonalds.

Police found him to be over the limit in the car park of the fast food outlet on the Upper Newtownards Road, Dundonald.

Herron, from the Motelands in east Belfast, pleaded guilty to a charge of driving with excess alcohol.

His defence solicitor revealed his Ulster rugby bosses had docked him two weeks' pay and made him unavailable for team selection.

Herron was banned from driving for a year, and fined £250.
