City Centre Initiative has been presented with a Gold award by the Northern Ireland Office for their running of CCTV in Londonderry.

To mark the achievement, Mayor of Derry Helen Quigley presented the award to CCI chief executive Stephen Kelly at the Guildhall yesterday.

Mayor Quigley said she was delighted the city's CCTV system was being acknowledged as an example of good practice.

She also paid tribute to those involved in funding, managing and overseeing the system, adding she was confident it had helped make the city a much safer place to live, work and visit.

Thomas Conway, chairman of Derry City Council's Community Safety Partnership, said the gold accreditation was a fitting acknowledgement of the close circuit system currently running.

He said: "The fact that Derry has been awarded the top award is a very prestigious accolade and one which assesses the effectiveness of the management, operation and procedures of our CCTV system and personnel involved."

Mr Kelly said CCI were delighted to have received the award.

"We have taken great care to ensure that the system in operation in our city, under our control, meets the highest standards of compliance with legislation and is open and accountable" he said.

"The award is true recognition of the tremendous work that the CCTV partnership, in particular our dedicated staff, have undertaken throughout the five years of operation."
