Search on for Olympic torch-bearers
The Olympic torch has made its first visit outside London to Northern Ireland.
The impressive gold torch was taken to locations across Belfast yesterday to encourage people to nominate torch-bearers for the London 2012 games.
Organisers are looking for 600 people from Northern Ireland whose personal stories have the power to inspire millions of people watching the Olympic Torch Relay around the world. Sports Minister Caral Ni Chuilin said she wants people to get busy nominating before the deadline on June 29.
“We need at least 600 people to be torch-bearers in the North,” she said. “We need to think about someone, and we all know one of them, who is an ordinary person who does extraordinary things.”
She added that she is still hopeful the province will be selected as a training base by one of the competing Olympic nations.
“I’m hopeful that Sport NI, who are leading this, are doing everything.
“They are pulling out the stops out to try and attract different teams from hundreds of countries around the world to promote this place as a perfect site for pre-games training.”
