Second cross-border service held

War veterans will be honoured at a second cross-border service involving veterans from the Irish Republic and the north.

The Mayor of Drogheda, Paul Bell - whose great grandfather was killed fighting with the British Army in World War I - will attend a Poppy Day commemoration in Whiteabbey, Co Antrim.

He will stand side by side with the DUP Mayor of Newtownabbey, Paula Bradley, to take the salute as veterans and serving soldiers, sailors and airmen and cadets parade past after their traditional church service.

Last Saturday, ex-British soldiers and former troops from the Irish Republic held a two-minute silence together at a service in Co Louth to remember British Army war dead from across Ireland.

The annual event was held at the war memorial in Drogheda's Mary Street.
