Security alert disruption
There was an ongoing security alert in north Belfast at the time of going to press yesterday.
At around 3pm a call was made to the PSNI regarding an alleged suspect device in the area.
Police closed off the area from Limestone Road to Fortwilliam Park.
A police spokesperson said: “A suspicious device has been found.” Army bomb disposal experts were working on the device by 5pm.
“We are cooperating with partner agencies,” said the PSNI spokesperson
“We cannot confirm exactly how many homes have been evacuated but it is approximately between twenty and thirty.
“A rest centre has been arranged and we can foresee that the road will remain closed for some time.”
The device caused major disruptions on the Antrim Road and police suggested those travelling use Cave Hill and the Shore Road.
A north Belfast resident who did not wish to be named said: “It is ridiculous that we still have to put up with this carry-on disrupting our lives. All I want to do is get back into my house.”
