Security alert shuts M1 from Belfast to Sprucefield
A security alert shut the M1 at rush hour on Tuesday following the discovery of a suspicious object.
The motorway (countrybound) was closed between Junctions 1 and 6, from Belfast to Sprucefield, from about 3pm until 5.30pm.
Army bomb disposal experts were sent to the scene and declared the object as nothing untoward.
Chief Inspector Natalie Wilson said: "Police are now working to reopen roads affected by the incident.
"We appreciate the level of frustration that everyone has felt and we are hopeful that traffic will be able to move freely soon.”
The PSNI has ramped up security levels in anticipation of violent attacks from dissident republicans.
