Selection of civil service chief 'must be more open'

SDLP West Belfast MLA Alex Attwood has again called on the First and Deputy First Ministers to suspend the current recruitment competition for the head of the civil service and implement a more open process.
Mr Attwood said: "I've again written to the First and Deputy First Ministers urging that the recruitment competition for the head of the civil service is suspended and the issue reviewed at next Thursday's Executive meeting.
"I have written twice since September 3, urging this course of action.
"The right appointment process for the head of the civil service is one that's open and welcomes external applicants and builds confidence.
"The process dictated by the First and Deputy First Ministers is closed, excludes external applicants and is not the way to best build confidence.
"It's not correct that this is the process for the head of the civil service while both the Chief Constable of the PSNI and the Lord Chief Justice were recruited by independent bodies, in a vastly more open process.
"I am of the firm belief that the more senior management of senior civil service is opened up, the better it is for senior civil service, better for government and better for the people."
